About

Author Steven GoldsmithI’m author Steven Goldsmith and the writing bug bit me more than thirty years ago when I wasn’t looking, and the virus it introduced into my system has remained active ever since.

At first, the signs and symptoms of this infection consisted of letters and articles that I wrote for professional journals in the fields of psychiatry and alternative medicine. There was also the singular fever spike of inspiration that I suffered on a transcontinental flight, when for the first and only time I composed haiku, two of which were published (Second Coming literary magazine, Summer, 1973).

Gradually my illness spread, commandeering progressively more of my being for its occult aims. And so I began to write books, at first nonfiction, with the publication in 1986 of Psychotherapy of People with Physical Symptoms: Brief Strategic Approaches (University Press of America), then several unpublished (all right, unpublishable) thrillers and nonfiction works about health care. Finally, in 2013, my nonfiction work, The Healing Paradox: A Revolutionary Approach to Treating and Curing Physical and Mental Illness (North Atlantic Books) snuck into print amid favorable reviews.

Though other nonfiction projects subsequently beckoned, and still do, in the past year I have responded anew to the seductions of book-length fiction, specifically a psychological thriller, completed and currently entitled Sorry. I have another novel, one involving time travel and medicine, in the planning stage.

As to aspects of my non-writing background, I am a physician, having received my M.D. from the Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons and subsequent training in psychiatry, in which I am Board-certified, at Boston University Hospital. For years, currently in Portland, OR, I have maintained a practice (GreenPsychiatrist.com) in which I emphasize natural solutions to mental and medical illness.
